Greater Los Angeles

Childhelp® exists to meet the physical, emotional, educational, and spiritual needs of abused, neglected, and at-risk children. Childhelp® provides comprehensive response to victims of child abuse which includes advocacy, prevention, treatment, and community outreach. The Greater Los Angeles Chapter (GLAC) of Childhelp® is an organized team effort to create awareness in Southern California of this serious epidemic and to raise funding to support the organization and its nationally recognized programs. The GLAC is proud to be the original Childhelp® volunteer fundraising engine. Our annual events provide important outreach, and are opportunities to get involved and make a difference.

Our Founders Sara O'Meara and Yvonne Fedderson built Childhelp® in Southern California. They have driven sweeping and successful advocacy and intervention efforts on behalf of abused children and foster families for nearly 50 years. Los Angeles was the founding headquarters of Childhelp® for more than three decades. Boasting an impressive 'soldiers of the cause' legacy, the Founders, many of their friends, and some original members of the GLAC are still actively involved. Since its inception, the continuous and unparalleled support from the Southern California community has enabled Childhelp® to grow into a national organization. As individuals we become voices of the cause. As a collective, lives are changed, and conditions improve.

In the U.S., almost a half million children are victims of abuse and neglect, annually. A report of child abuse is made every ten seconds. And, nearly 1500 are killed due to abuse each year. Over 250,000 children entered foster care in 2010. In California, a child is abused or neglected every 4 minutes, and our state accepts a child into the foster system over 100 times every day. As the GLAC Member, Sponsor, and Volunteer involvement expands, it has experienced a surge in fundraising and advancement outreach intent on efforts of substantial impact to area neglected and abused children. The GLAC is committed to furthering the Childhelp® programs for wellness and safety that are being implemented locally and nationwide:

Childhelp® National Hotline: 1-800-4-A-CHILD. The Childhelp® National Hotline is available to anyone for help and hope in time of crises. The GLAC fundraising provides for over 17,000 hotline calls annually.

Childhelp® Foster Care Services: In Southern California Childhelp® provides short and long-term therapeutic foster care to abused and neglected children in a caring and safe environment in which they can heal, resume going to school, and continue their developmental growth.

Childhelp® Blow the Whistle: This prevention education initiative exists to promote the safe physical, emotional, educational and spiritual development of youth athletes. The program is also designed to aid coaches, educators and parents in providing secure environments where children can reach their ultimate potential.

Childhelp® Speak Up Be Safe: Childhelp® Speak Up Be Safe is the 21st Century incarnation of Good-Touch, Bad-Touch®, and utilizes web-based tools, a curriculum on Internet safety and cyber-bullying, and a redirected focus on adult responsibility to keep children safe. In addition to increasing knowledge of abusive behaviors and resistance skill-building, this program focuses on creating a responsive safety network with peers, teachers, parents/caregivers, and other adults.

Childhelp® Merv Griffin Village: Childhelp® residential treatment facilities (villages) provide nurturing, specialized and comprehensive treatment programs (psychotherapy, education, art, music, animal-therapy, spiritual, and recreation) for court-referred, severely abused, neglected, and at-risk children. GLAC fundraising contributes to the support of over 300 resident children per year. Our chapter also gets involved in the enhancement of holiday and birthday festivities, and enrichment programs such as reading buddies.

Childhelp® Group Homes of California: Childhelp® group homes provide safe, stable environments for neglected, abused and abandoned children. In conjunction with individual therapies and interventions, children incorporate community resources, and literacy and financial skill-building to facilitate transition to adulthood.

Childhelp® Foster Family and Adoption Programs: The GLAC is proud of our involvement in these programs and boasts chapter members who have successfully fostered and adopted through these channels. Thousands of children each year need to be placed in safe and secure homes. For over 20 years, these programs have been connecting loving families with children by actively recruiting, certifying and training foster/adoptive families in Southern California. Childhelp also completes S.A.F.E. adoption home studies and assists families in preparing for adoptive placement.

For the love of a child - Join us! The GLAC is your opportunity to get involved and truly make a sweeping difference.
