Child Safety at School

GOOD-TOUCH/BAD-TOUCH® is a research-based, proven-effective body safety and violence prevention education curriculum for Pre-K through 6th Grades. It works as a tool to teach children the skills they need to play a significant role in prevention or interruption of violence (including child abuse/sexual abuse, sexual harassment and bullying of all types) in their own lives. Children are taught what abuse is; are given prevention skills including personal body safety rules ("tools" they can put into their tool bags to draw on if needed); and are motivated into action if threatened. A variety of materials are used to reinforce the concepts and to help keep children focused.

GOOD-TOUCH/BAD-TOUCH® has been modified for use with children in preschool, for those who are 4 and 5 years old.

GOOD-TOUCH/BAD-TOUCH® is not sex education. It is violence prevention, meeting many school health and safety curriculum objectives.

Although the program has a strong emphasis on sexual abuse prevention, it is important to note that beginning in the 2nd grade, the program expands into physical abuse and bullying. In the 5th and 6th grades GOOD-TOUCH/BAD-TOUCH® also addresses sexual harassment, physical abuse, emotional abuse and neglect. Internet and technology safety skills are taught, as well as bystander strategies to help promote safety on school grounds as well as at home or other places where children spend time.

GOOD-TOUCH/BAD-TOUCH® builds resiliency in children, to prevent violence and other serious, more long-term problems for schools, such as drug and alcohol abuse, teen pregnancies, depression and other mental health problems, juvenile delinquency and other aggression problems.

GOOD-TOUCH/BAD-TOUCH® works effectively to prevent both victims and offenders of child abuse, sexual abuse, sexual harassment and bullying (including cyberbullying or bullying by technology).

GOOD-TOUCH/BAD-TOUCH® creates safer school environments, promoting thoughtful, nurturing discussions between adults and children to prevent, address and solve these sensitive and serious problems of abuse, sexual abuse, sexual harassment and bullying in our communities.

Most educators are pleased to learn that this curriculum has been field-tested with over 250,000 children; has been found effective through independent, rigorous scientific research conducted by professionals at the University of Georgia; and that the research has been published in Behavior Therapy. Additionally, researchers found that the blend and variety of materials and techniques used contributed toward the children's ability to learn prevention skills.
