Childhelp® expands child abuse prevention and treatment to Colorado
PHOENIX (June 26, 2007) – Childhelp®, a national nonprofit child abuse prevention and treatment organization, will open its fifth children’s advocacy center in Glenwood Springs, Colo. this summer.
The Childhelp® River Bridge Advocacy Center, located just south of Valley View Hospital in Glenwood Springs, Colo., provides a child-friendly environment while employing a highly-effective, one-stop approach to the investigation and treatment of child abuse. The state-of-the-art facility houses professionals in the areas of law enforcement, child protective services, medicine and prosecution – all of which work together as a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary team to reduce further trauma to the child while, at the same time, strengthening the investigative process.
“This is a great step towards preventing and treating child abuse across the nation,” said Krista Richards, director of Childhelp® River Bridge Advocacy Center. “With each new center we open, we come closer and closer towards our dream of ending child abuse. I know the children of Garfield County and surrounding areas will really benefit from our presence here”
The center will represent a strong public/private partnership between Childhelp®, Valley View Hospital and Garfield County, Colo. All types of services needed by a victim are housed at the child-friendly facility, including medical and forensic exams, child protective services, law enforcement services and mental health services. These centrally-located agencies work together when an abuse report is received. There is no duplication of effort and, most importantly, the advocacy center minimizes secondary trauma to victims that can be caused by the intervention process itself.
The advocacy center features a cottage-style design, with windows adorned with shutters and flower boxes. Each room is painted in soft colors and the interior is furnished with furniture in bright colors of red, yellow and green. The advocacy center also houses a reception room, children’s play area, two exam rooms, two interview rooms and a bath and shower for victims to use when needed.
