Programs and Services

Virginia offers an array of child abuse prevention and education programs for children, families, and professionals in the Virginia, Maryland  and Washington, DC Metropolitan area.

Prevention

The Childhelp National Child Abuse Hotline 1-800-4-A-CHILD (1-800-422-4453)
Serves the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico, Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. Established in 1982, it is anonymous and confidential and is staffed by professional crisis counselors who, through translators, can provide assistance in 140 languages.

Intervention

The Childhelp Children's Center of Virginia
The Childhelp Children's Center of Virginia (CCCV) is a public/private partnership that provides a continuum of integrated services for the efficient and effective intervention of child abuse. All services needed by a victim are housed at a single child-friendly facility, including: medical exam, forensic exam, child protective services, law enforcement services and mental health services. These co-located agencies work together when a report of abuse is received. There is no duplication of effort. Investigations proceed swiftly. Children promptly receive care and treatment. Key evidence is collected and preserved. Prosecutions of offenders are more successful. Most importantly, the CCCV minimizes secondary trauma to victims that can be caused by the intervention process itself.

Treatment

Residential Treatment Services

Residential Treatment Services are offered to mentally ill/emotionally disturbed and mentally ill/mentally retarded children between the ages of five and 13. Many of these children also have been severely abused and/or neglected. The Alice C. Tyler Village, located near Culpeper, VA, offers a multitude of services example of which include:

  • Individual, group, expressive, recreational, and animal assisted therapies;
  • A complete academic program with a special education component;
  • Full time psychiatry services; and
  • 24-nursing coverage.

In addition to its residential services, the Village offers day-school programs for surrounding areas. The Village is JCAHO certified, fully licensed by the State of Virginia, and accepts Medicaid.

Volunteer Opportunities

There are several ways for everyone in the community to volunteer for Childhelp Virginia. Some involve hands-on work, some involve fundraising and community outreach, and some involve working one-on-one with children. Email us or call 703-208-1500 to find out how to get started! Please be sure to indicate which type of volunteering you are interested in.

Some of the possibilities are:

  • Playroom Volunteer: The Playroom Volunteer provides supervision and comfort to abused children in the playroom while they are receiving various services at the advocacy center.
  • Volunteer Mentor: Volunteer Mentors provide a positive influence in the lives of children who are at-risk. By providing companionship, emotional support , and guidance, the mentor will help the child develop appropriate coping skills, enhance his or her self-esteem and learn how to develop healthy relationships. The mentor will also help with school work and encourage the child to complete school and set goals that may have once seemed impossible to obtain.
  • Volunteer Administrative Assistant: Volunteers are needed to help the Program Directors with various administrative projects. Great working environment.
  • Chapter/Auxillary Member: Volunteer chapters and auxiliaries of Childhelp are a diverse group of volunteers with a wide range of backgrounds, ages and interests.
