Child abuse and neglect kills close to five children each day which is why at Childhelp, we use the Five Too Many hashtag to bring awareness to the horrible crimes against children.
In the United States, more than 3.6 million referrals are made to child protection agencies involving more than 6.6 million children. And on average, there’s a report of abuse made every 10 seconds. When you get to the end of this sentence, another report would have been made. In all, state agencies estimate over 700,000 children are victims of maltreatment each year.
Economically, it’s getting worse. New estimates suggest the cost of child abuse will reach $150 billion – or 1.2 percent of per capita income for developed nations – a year in the United States.
US News and Reports adds, “The financial cost of child abuse includes treatment of physical injuries, future loss of productivity due to injuries, as well as lower levels of education and future income. Also, child abuse is associated with higher health costs in adulthood.”
While we have the data, some may not fully grasp just how perilous child abuse can be on children in both the short term and long term. This video below, by Dr. Nadine Burke Harris, examines “How childhood trauma affects health across a lifetime.” It is one of the most educational videos you will watch and will surely make you want to get involved to fight child abuse. Take the time and view the video in its entirety and share it with friends and family.
