The motto is “Every child is adoptable.”

November is Adoption Awareness Month, and St. Louis County has 70 children, from infants to teenagers, looking for permanent homes.

County Juvenile Officer Jesse Cannon wants to promote the message that “you don’t have to be perfect to be a perfect parent.” She says families come in all shapes and sizes, and all of them might be the best thing that ever happened to a child in the juvenile system.

“Single folks can adopt, you know nontraditional families,” Cannon says. “We consider everybody a family as long as it is a safe home for a child.”

She says the number of kids needing placement is going down each year, from over 100 kids in need a few years ago. But Cannon says 40 children aged out of foster care last year with out a permanent family, and this year they are especially looking for families to adopt some of the older children.
