It was an ordinary Tuesday when the call came into the Childhelp Foster Family Agency in California. On the other end was a hospital social worker stating that a newborn baby boy had just been safely surrendered.
He was just a few days old — underweight, fragile, addicted to drugs, and alone. His mother had done the bravest thing she could: Placing him somewhere safe and giving him a chance at a future she was unable to provide. But what would that future look like?
The Childhelp team immediately reached out to a trusted resource parent who had been yearning for a newborn to call her own. Without hesitation, she said yes. She visited the baby every day while he was recovering in the hospital and their bond quickly formed. And when he was released from the hospital, she brought him home — to his home.
Over the months that followed, he began to thrive. His laughter filled the house, his steps grew steadier, and the love for him expanded. And today, at 13 months old, he is a curious, strong, and sweet little boy. Soon, the paperwork will be signed to make official what has been true all along: He is her son.
